Meet Sophie Probert-Hughes

What is your role at Avison Young?

Senior Rights of Light & Daylight/Sunlight Surveyor.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

I left university having studied human geography and although I knew I wanted to work in a commercial environment I wasn’t sure exactly what career path to take. My first job was working for a leading Estate Agency and after a couple of years’ experience I looked for a new challenge. I went for a rights of light and daylight/sunlight surveyor role and although I didn’t have any surveying experience at the time, I got the job. That was over five years ago now and I haven’t looked back since!

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

My husband and family, they are an endless source of support and advice whenever I need it. What is the best advice you've ever received?

Always do your best as that’s all someone can ever ask from you. And the advice I would give to other young women is to push yourself out of your comfort zone and keep striving to get what you want. Don't let other people tell you what you can and can't do. How Has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business?

I’m very lucky that my Director and wider team are very supportive and give me the space and responsibility to grow and progress in my role.

In addition, initiatives put forward by Avison Young such as the Emerging Leaders group have enabled me to raise my profile within the company and provided opportunities to get to know other like-minded professionals both within the company and the wider industry. What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I have a grade 6 in singing.
