Manager, Financial Reporting Northern California Region
Meet Shannon Dupler
What is your role at Avison Young?
Manager, Financial Reporting, Northern California Financials.
I oversee financial reporting for the region, I'm also the Office Manager of the San Jose/Silicon Valley office, and a financial analyst for our region's brokers.
How did you get into commercial real estate?
I began as a Financial Analyst for CBRE's Project Management service line where I had previously worked in residential land development. It wasn't until joining Avison Young did I begin to learn the brokerage/transaction side of commercial real estate.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?
The mentoring of Nick Slonek and John Cashin when I first started preparing financial analysis for Lending Club was probably the most influential experience in my commercial real estate career. My prior knowledge of tenant or landlord leases was practically zero but everyone was patient to teach me and educate me when I made mistakes or wrong assumptions. It was fun, nervous and exciting all at the same time, but I learned so much, so quickly in a small period of time.
What is the best advice you've ever received?
Things aren't always black and white; learn to accept the "grays". My DNA is black and white, so this was something I truly had to learn to accept and embrace.
How has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business?
I feel AY's commitment to diversity and inclusiveness is powerful and speaks for itself. From the top down this messaging is clear and the program we have with the Women's Network, is a great resource. I'm confident that I have a continue path of career growth within AY.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I despise reading and I've read more books cover to cover as a parent to my daughter than I ever had as a child or adult myself. Sadly, these books aren't all that complex! Occasionally, you can catch me reading a magazine with lots of pictures, but that's about it.
