Meet Sara Barnes

What is your role at Avison Young?

Research Manager - I oversee research and market analysis for the Atlanta market. I gather market data in order to produce local market and submarket reports as well as informative touch pieces for brokers to send to their clients.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

My dad is an industrial broker and I saw how much he enjoyed working in the industry. I knew I wanted to get into commercial real estate in some fashion, I just wasn't sure if I wanted to go straight into brokerage or pursue a different avenue such as research.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

My parents have been the biggest influences in my life. My dad showed me that if you work hard, show dedication and do the right thing you will always be rewarded. My mom showed me that as a woman you can have it all by being successful in the work place and raising a family.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

The best advice I ever received was from Char Fortune when I was first getting into the business. She told me that you don't have to "play the game" that so many women feel pressured to play in order to compete with men in the industry. That if you are true to yourself and others, you will be successful.

How has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business?

Avison Young has supported me by hiring me as one of the few female research managers in the Atlanta market, as well as treating me equally to my male peers and offering me a leadership role within the US Research team.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

That after 18 years I have started competitively dancing again in jazz and tap dances.
