Mary Tamaki

U.S. Director of Marketing

Meet Mary Tamaki

What is your role at Avison Young?

As U.S. Director of Marketing, I’m responsible for setting the vision for marketing success that aligns with key goals of the U.S. business; driving day-to-day execution of marketing and business development initiatives; and fostering a team culture of collaboration across the marketing organization.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

Through theater, of course. I actually started as a temp, a graphic designer who worked on pitches and proposals. But it was my background in theater that landed me the full-time gig and promotion. When asked to work on presentations, I immediately went to music, staging, flashy intros and choreography, the brokers never knew what hit them. We won multiple pitches and I soon became the go to for marketing and presentation workshops. It was my background in theater that drove the dramatic impact, I really didn’t know any better. That was over 20 years ago.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

My dad, he was a man who walked with kings and always kept the common touch. My Mom, a real estate tycoon, a princess and a warrior. My older brother Paul, who continously demonstrates what it means to put others first. My dear baby brother JT, he was a giant in the community with a heart of gold. My husband Jay, who makes me feel precious everyday and gives me the courage to succeed. My son Ian, a brilliant poet and minstrel, whose kindness and creativity knows no bounds. I love them with all my heart!

What is the best advice you've ever received?

I take cues from music. Bob Marley taught me to “Don’t worry… about a thing… cuz every little thing’s gonna be alright….”

How has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business?

By bringing me together with some of the smartest, most amazing women I’ve ever worked with.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I have a masters degree in classical Japanese dance, and I’m a drummer in a punk rock band.
