Senior Surveyor

Meet Lucy Hancock

What is your role at Avison Young?

I’m a Senior Surveyor in the Land and Development Team based in the Birmingham office.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

My dad! I wasn’t 100% sure on a career path when I left school so I studied English just because I loved it. Then after some great (and not so great) work experience I decided surveying was for me and studied for a Real Estate MA. Dad’s a residential surveyor, so not wanting to be a complete copycat, the next stop for me was a commercial Office and Industrial graduate role where I learnt A LOT about eaves heights and loved nothing more than an electric roller shutter. Fast forward nearly 6 years and I made the switch to the Land and Development Team at AY and haven’t looked back.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

My mum! Totally biased but she’s the best. From madly cheering on the sidelines of many, many sports matches as a kid to being one calm swan in the wake of any teenage crisis! Mum always sees the positives and makes one amazing cuppa.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

Learn to fail and don’t take yourself too seriously!

What advice would you give to young women to succeed in the workplace?

Don't take it personally and be resilient! I'm my toughest critic and remembering to be kind to yourself as well as others works wonders.

How has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business?

I’m part of the Emerging Leaders programme and also take part in mentoring sessions for women at my level in our office which helps us share our aspirations for developing our careers here at Avison Young.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I’ve been enlisted as a bridesmaid five times across this year so my wardrobe has benefitted tremendously! I’m sure I’ll be looking very bridesmaid-y at the next work formal!
