What is your role at Avison Young?

Principal and Legal Counsel. I am the Legal Team liaison for the non-U.S. offices, and I work on acquisition, investment management and AY Development matters.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

Slow down. With email, our first instinct is to respond immediately. It is important to give yourself time to reflect on the question asked and consider your response. The same should apply to every aspect of our workday. Take a moment to reflect before responding, even if that means you have to get back to the individual or group asking the question.

How has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business? In my first 18 months with Avison Young, I have benefited from the company’s openness, diversity and collaborative culture, all of which allow me to observe, interact with and learn from leaders in the organization. I have been especially lucky to work with a number of women in senior leadership in the organization, all of whom have served as sponsors as I navigate my own career.

What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace?

It is important to build networks and identify sponsors and mentors, but it is also important to trust yourself. Seize opportunities and take on new challenges, even if it is uncomfortable.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I love hiking and adventure travel. I have been camping in western Mongolia and in the Andes in Peru.
