Meet Chelsey Henderson

What is your role at Avison Young?

Senior Surveyor – Lease Advisory in Birmingham How did you get into commercial real estate?

The long way. Initially I wanted to be a commercial solicitor and got a job as a Legal Assistant on Eversheds real estate team, while studying part-time for a law degree. After successful completion of my undergraduate degree, I decided being a solicitor wasn’t for me however I really enjoyed working in property. I started working at GVA as team secretary to the Automotive & Roadside team while studying part-time for a master’s degree in real estate management, after which I went on to join the graduate programme. Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

My dad had a successful career in property working for house builders and developers which I think indirectly influenced me toward becoming a surveyor. What is the best advice you've ever received?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions even once you’re qualified, you will always be learning throughout your career. How has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business?

I feel there is a delicate balance to be struck when discussing the issues that face women working in property and improving gender balance in the industry. The key to this is ensuring that equal opportunities exist, with women supported without being treated differently within a typically male-dominated industry. My own experience is that equal opportunities are available at Avison Young and I am encouraged to progress in my career.
