Meet Anne-Marie Ayers

What is your role at Avison Young?

I have recently joined Avison Young as a Principal. I am an office specialist advising and consulting both owners and users.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

In college, I was captivated and intrigued about the development occurring in the Tampa Bay market, which led me to become licensed, and then pursue my first job in development turning down traditional marketing opportunities. Friends now tell me that they thought I was crazy! Maybe it takes just a little bit of crazy to get into this business and a lot of perseverance to succeed.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

My mother has been the biggest influence in my life. Born in 1925 and turning 95 this month, she was a pioneer following her passion in biology and chemistry and was allowed to attend and graduate from an all-male Jesuit University as the first female graduate. She taught us not to see the gender barriers and her husband, my father, supported and admired her intellect, wisdom and tenacity. They were a great team.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Be brave!

How has Avison Young supported you as a woman in business?

While my experience is limited, the interactions that I have had prior and since joining AY have been incredibly refreshing which invigorates me!

What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace? Be brave!

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Before attending 5 schools in 5 years, 6th thru 10th grades, I was shy and unsure of myself socially. Those moves, while painful, changed my perspective on human interactions.
