In England, there are currently 26 forms of business rates reliefs (23 in Scotland) - that can be mandatory or discretionary - and 14 classes of exemption. Since 2010 the number of available reliefs has increased from 17 to 26, and between 2018 and 2019 the government offered £4.5bn in relief.

Our teams work very closely with our clients to maximise the relief they receive against the often complex backdrop of devolution and localism. In terms of reliefs, local authorities interpret regulations very differently. We work closely with our legal team to ensure consistency across local authorities in the awarding of reliefs and always strive to secure exemption savings for our clients.
