What is your role at Avison Young?

I work as Global Senior Treasury Analyst with Rob Dunlop, my team is essentially charged with establishing the corporate treasury function.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

Avision Young is my first commercial real estate job, and my joining the firm was more serendipitous than intentional. Avison Young has been a fantasitic place to work. I have always been obsessed with real estate; afterall, in the United States, black history is inextricably linked to real estate. This is why it's a pleasure to be part of a company whose stated D+I values align with its strategy. It is what makes us exceptional. Our emphasis on people power.

What does inclusion mean to you?

I am based in the Chicago office. When I interviewed for my position, I walked into the office lobby to see a banner emblazoned with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater logo on it. Alvin Ailey Dance is one of the most significant and iconic black institutions in the United States. I tell this story to demostrate that an inclusive culture depends on both small acts as well as addressing larger issues such as advancement, supplier diversity, and recruitment. From day one, I felt at home at AY.

What's an impactful way that professionals can be an ally for underrepresented groups in the workplace?

The answer to this question is simple to me. The obsessive focus on outcomes that we apply to other business initiatives, needs to be applied to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What has been your experience being in an underrepresented group in a historically non-diverse industry?

It is worth being blunt about my professional experience. Prior to AY, my experience was not great. I often felt devalued and alienated. I was the only person of color in most rooms I entered. The lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion is not unique to CRE, but it is an issue that CRE can and should address. Not only because its the right thing to do, but because study after study shows that it offers measureable benefits to a company. I am glad AY has made that commitment.

The obsessive focus on outcomes that we apply to other business initiatives, needs to be applied to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
