What is your role at Avison Young?

Marketing & Admin. Coordinator.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

After graduating from college, I started out as a Research Associate at CoStar Group in Washington, DC. When I moved to back to California I worked with a Real Estate Developer as a Office Manager which eventually helped me land my role at Avison Young.

What does inclusion mean to you?

For me, inclusion means that you see more representation of people who think, look and act like you do.

Give us an example of inclusion in action at the workplace.

Inclusion can be having someone participate in a project they may not be fully skilled at yet or experience with. It's giving others the opportunity to learn all aspects of the business.

What's an impactful way that professionals can be an ally for underrepresented groups in the workplace?

Ask for their feedback and ideas on work processes. Give an open floor to discuss challenges and solutions.

What has been your experience being in an underrepresented group in a historically non-diverse industry?

As I represent two groups of underrepresentation I've found that its pushed me to do more and to be seen. I realize that there is beauty in being the first or the few in a your industry where you can teach something new or help shift the culture around you. It hasn't always been a successful journey but it's worth it.

Tell us about the accomplishments you're most proud of across your career.

I really can't pin point just one thing but I'm proud of the woman I've become throughout my experiences. Thanks to great mentorship and a willingness to grow in my confidence and abilities I've been able to be a part of some amazing projects. Some include being selected to expand a CRE data-base into the Toronto Market, being a part of the team that helped develop a financial literacy app, and facilitating fundraising events with CREW in San Francisco.

For me, inclusion means that you see more representation of people who think, look and act like you do.
